The White House announced late Thursday that U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to reduce funding for PBS (Public Broadcasting Service) and NPR (National Public Radio), in what is seen as his latest move to use federal funding as leverage against media organizations he views unfavorably.
According to the order, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB)—the agency responsible for distributing funds to both networks—must “cease direct funding” to PBS and NPR. The order described both outlets as “partisan and biased.”
“The CPB shall cancel current direct funding to the maximum extent permitted by law, and decline to provide any future funding,” the order stated.
In earlier responses, both PBS and NPR warned that Trump’s efforts to cut their funding would undermine essential media services and have a “devastating impact” on millions of Americans—particularly those in rural areas—who rely on their programming for reliable local and national news, especially during emergencies.
