The Indian government announced on Saturday a comprehensive ban on the import of goods from Pakistan or transiting through its territory, marking the latest escalation in diplomatic tensions between the two countries following a deadly attack on tourists in the disputed region of Kashmir.
In an official notification, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade stated that the decision would take immediate effect, noting that the ban was imposed “in the interest of national security and public policy.”
The move follows a militant attack days earlier in the popular tourist area of Pahalgam in the Kashmir Valley, which left at least 26 tourists dead. India has accused Pakistan of involvement in the attack, a claim that Islamabad strongly denies.
In response, Pakistan announced that it possesses “credible intelligence” suggesting that India is planning imminent military action, further heightening fears of a broader conflict between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.
