Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced that India will cut off water from rivers originating in its territory that irrigate Pakistan, a move that could escalate tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations.

This announcement comes as the UN Security Council urged India and Pakistan to de-escalate tensions and avoid military conflict following an attack on tourists in Kashmir that resulted in 26 deaths.

The Pakistani foreign ministry informed the council of intelligence indicating an imminent threat from India, while Islamabad denied any involvement in the attack and affirmed its readiness to defend itself.
