The European Union has warned of imposing stricter sanctions on Moscow if progress is not made to end the war in Ukraine, as Kyiv refuses to negotiate without a ceasefire.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced during a joint press conference with the Greek Prime Minister that a new sanctions package is ready for implementation, stating that the EU is prepared to act this week.

Direct talks between Russia and Ukraine are expected to begin next Thursday in Turkey, as proposed by President Vladimir Putin.
