Mexico: Candidate assassinated in Veracruz ahead of municipal elections in June

Yasnia Lara Gutierrez, a candidate from Mexico’s ruling Morena party, was shot dead by armed assailants while leading a convoy of her supporters in the town of Texistepec in Veracruz state, just before the elections scheduled for June 1.

The attack resulted in the deaths of four other individuals and left three others injured.

This incident marks the latest episode in the rising violence associated with the electoral process in Mexico, making it the second assassination of a local candidate in the state.
