Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks Begin in Istanbul Amid Global Attention

A new round of direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine is set to begin this morning in the Turkish city of Istanbul, in what is widely seen as a crucial attempt to end the devastating war that has raged between the two countries since February 24, 2022, leaving thousands dead and injured and causing widespread destruction.

According to Russia’s TASS news agency, citing an informed source, the negotiations are scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. local time (07:00 GMT) and will take place behind closed doors, reflecting the sensitivity of the discussions.

This round of talks follows a long and bloody conflict that has seen phases of military buildup, open hostilities, failed diplomatic initiatives, and the signing of the Turkey- and UN-brokered grain deal—only to fall into prolonged deadlock.

The international community is closely watching the outcome of the summit, which comes amid mixed signals. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has confirmed his personal participation, while Russian President Vladimir Putin will not attend, instead dispatching a delegation led by Presidential Advisor Vladimir Medinsky.
