At Least Five Dead, Over 100 Injured as Severe Floods Hit Multiple Regions in Algeria

Algeria’s Civil Protection Agency announced on Thursday that at least five people were killed and more than 100 injured after torrential rains triggered flash floods across several parts of the country.

In Djelfa, located approximately 300 kilometers south of the capital Algiers, three people died after a bus was trapped and submerged by floodwaters, according to local authorities.

A 13-year-old boy also lost his life after being struck by large hailstones, while another victim was swept away by the floods. Rescue teams are continuing their search for one person who remains missing.

Heavy rainfall persisted throughout Thursday in both northern and southern parts of Algeria, the largest country in Africa by land area, complicating emergency response efforts.

The National Meteorological Office had previously issued warnings of rainfall reaching up to 90 millimeters, cautioning of the high risk of flash floods and rising water levels in low-lying areas.
