The Vatican witnessed the inauguration ceremony of Pope Leo XIV on Sunday, marking the first time an American has assumed the papacy in the Catholic Church’s history.

The inauguration ceremony occurred in St. Peter’s Square and was attended by prominent figures, including U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

The new pope also presided over an official Mass, announcing the beginning of his papacy.
