U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to hold a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday in a renewed attempt to “stop the bloodshed” in Ukraine, as he described it, following stalled peace talks between Kyiv and Moscow in Istanbul last week.
The upcoming conversation comes after Trump’s campaign pledge to end the war within 24 hours of taking office. However, his diplomatic efforts since assuming the presidency in January have yet to produce tangible results.
On Friday, Istanbul hosted the first direct negotiations between Ukrainian and Russian delegations in nearly three years, but the talks concluded without any agreement on a ceasefire.
Following the meeting, Trump announced his intention to speak directly with Putin and confirmed plans to also contact Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and several NATO leaders. “I hope this will be a productive day,” Trump said, “and that a ceasefire can be achieved to end this very violent war that should never have happened.”
Trump has recently endorsed calls for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, and both Washington and Moscow have underscored the need for a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Putin to resolve the conflict. “Nothing will happen until I meet him in person,” Trump stated.
