Overseas Voting Begins for South Korea’s 21st Presidential Election

Overseas voting for South Korea’s 21st presidential election officially began Tuesday, allowing Korean citizens living abroad to cast their ballots ahead of the main election set to take place in June.

According to the National Election Commission (NEC), voting is being conducted at 223 polling stations across 118 countries between May 20 and May 26.

This year marks the first time polling stations have been established in Cuba, Luxembourg, Lithuania, and Estonia, following the recent opening of South Korean diplomatic missions in those countries.

Additional polling stations have also been set up in 39 regions with more than 30,000 South Korean residents, as well as in military units stationed overseas—including the Dongmyeong Unit in Lebanon and the Hanbit Unit in Uganda.

The participation of overseas voters plays a crucial role in the democratic process, with candidates actively seeking to engage the Korean diaspora as part of their broader electoral strategies.
