Spain Calls Emergency Meeting of ‘Madrid Group’ on May 25 to Address Escalation in Gaza

Spain has called for an emergency meeting of the “Madrid Group” foreign ministers on May 25, aiming to coordinate diplomatic efforts to halt the ongoing Israeli offensive on the Gaza Strip, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares announced Tuesday.

The meeting will take place in Madrid and include participation from a number of foreign ministers representing European, Arab, and Islamic countries. “The primary goal is to prevent Gaza from becoming a mass grave,” Albares said, referring to the worsening humanitarian situation in the besieged enclave.

Turkey is among the countries expected to attend the gathering, alongside others that took part in the group’s last meeting in September 2024—namely Norway, Slovenia, Ireland, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, Qatar, and Bahrain.

The “Madrid Group” was established as a diplomatic platform to support the Palestinian cause and enhance international coordination toward a peaceful and just resolution to the conflict, amid growing calls for an immediate ceasefire and a lack of viable political solutions.
