China officially launched its first digital platform dedicated to documenting tropical biodiversity on Thursday, marking the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity with a major scientific initiative.
According to Xinhua News Agency, the platform—named the “Xishuangbanna Biodiversity Platform”—was developed by the Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden under the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The platform provides access to more than 90,000 verified records covering 15,622 species of plants, animals, and fungi, collected from one of China’s richest regions in terms of biodiversity.
Officials overseeing the project confirmed that all data has undergone rigorous scientific verification to ensure accuracy and reliability. Future plans include integrating artificial intelligence technologies to support ecological research and environmental education.
With this initiative, China aims to raise public and scientific awareness about the importance of biodiversity and to strengthen efforts toward sustainable conservation of fragile ecosystems.
