Iranian and U.S. negotiators are meeting in Rome on Friday for the fifth round of indirect talks over Tehran’s nuclear program, with the Sultanate of Oman acting as mediator in an effort to revive stalled diplomatic progress between the two sides.
According to Iran’s state news agency IRNA, the talks are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. local time (11:00 GMT). Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is leading the delegation from Tehran, which departed for Rome earlier today.
This latest round comes amid persistent tensions and a lack of consensus on key issues that have hindered efforts to restore the 2015 nuclear deal. Despite months of backchannel diplomacy, both sides remain at odds.
Speaking on Thursday, the Iranian foreign minister acknowledged that “fundamental disagreements” with the United States remain unresolved, casting doubt over the possibility of a breakthrough in this round of negotiations.
