Lebanon and Palestine Agree to Begin Disarmament of Refugee Camps Starting Mid-June

Lebanese and Palestinian officials have agreed to initiate the disarmament of Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon beginning mid-June, as part of an understanding reached during the official visit of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to Beirut, a Lebanese government source confirmed Friday.

Speaking to AFP on condition of anonymity, the source said, “It was agreed to launch an executive plan to begin disarming the camps, starting mid-June in Beirut-based camps, followed by others across the country.” The agreement was reached during a meeting of a newly formed joint committee, announced by both sides on Wednesday.

The decision marks a significant step in addressing the longstanding issue of weapons inside refugee camps in Lebanon—a matter that has been a source of internal tension and concern for decades.

The development comes amid renewed political momentum in Lebanese-Palestinian relations, with both parties expressing a shared commitment to improving security within the camps and enhancing the living conditions of Palestinian refugees in Lebanon.
