Twenty-one people have been killed in shelling of a market in the south-eastern Sudanese town of Sennar, which has been attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), after the government refused to set up an independent force to protect civilians.
The Sudan Doctors Network put the death toll at 21, noting that ‘more than 70 people were also injured’ in the shelling, which it attributed to the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) led by Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
Fighting in Sudan erupted in mid-April 2023 between the army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who is also the head of the Sovereignty Council and the country’s de facto ruler, and the RSF led by his ally and former deputy, Dagalo, known as Hamidti.
The conflict has pushed the country to the brink of famine, and humanitarian organisations have complained for months that insecurity is preventing them from delivering aid.
