Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas expressed his support for Hamas laying down its arms and ending its control over Gaza as part of the formation of a future Palestinian state. This statement came in a letter sent to French President Emmanuel Macron ahead of the upcoming United Nations conference on the two-state solution, set to take place in New York from June 17 to 21, with the participation of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

In his letter, Abbas also stated that he is willing to invite Arab and international forces to deploy as part of a stabilization/protection mission, provided it is mandated by the UN Security Council.
