Bangladesh starts process to ask India to extradite Sheikh Hasina

A Bangladesh court will start proceedings to seek the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who fled to India after her ouster on 5 August, the Attorney General’s Office said.

Mohammad Tajul Islam, prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal, said: ‘Since the most important official has fled the country, we will start legal proceedings to bring her back.’

The 76-year-old and her government are accused of widespread human rights violations, including the arbitrary detention and extrajudicial execution of political opponents.

She fled the country in August after weeks of student demonstrations that turned into a nationwide uprising.
