At least 20 people were injured when a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck Ecuador on Friday, according to a statement released by the National Secretariat for Risk Management.
The quake was strongly felt in several towns, including Eloy Alfaro, Atacames, Muisne, Quinindé, Río Verde, and San Lorenzo, all located in the western province of Esmeraldas.
Local authorities reported that 20 individuals sustained various injuries, and structural cracks appeared in 60 buildings. Repair work on damaged power lines began shortly after the quake, and electricity has since been restored to approximately 80% of the affected areas.
Footage circulating on social media showed partial collapses of several homes as a result of the tremor.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed that the earthquake had a magnitude of 6.3, with its epicenter located 20 kilometers northwest of Esmeraldas at a depth of 35 kilometers.
