The Libyan Ministry of Interior announced on Monday the discovery of at least 58 unidentified bodies inside the morgue refrigerator of the Accidents Hospital in the Abu Salim district of Tripoli — a facility that was under the control of an armed group whose leader was killed last week.
In an official statement, the ministry said the hospital administration had reported the presence of the bodies, prompting authorities to launch an investigation and initiate legal procedures to identify the victims.
So far, 23 bodies have been examined, with biological samples collected and data documented to assist in the identification process.
Photos released by the ministry showed the bodies numbered sequentially, with facial features obscured for privacy. Some of the corpses were found to be severely decomposed, while others had suffered burns.
The discovery comes just days after the killing of Abdul Ghani al-Kikli, widely known as “Ghneiwa,” commander of the Stability Support Apparatus — a powerful militia operating in Tripoli. His death has heightened security concerns and triggered further scrutiny into the activities of the group he led.
