Nicaragua Withdraws from UNESCO After Press Freedom Award to La Prensa

On Sunday, Nicaragua announced its sudden withdrawal from UNESCO, angered by the organization’s awarding of the World Press Freedom Prize to “La Prensa.”

UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay confirmed receiving an official letter from the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister regarding the decision.

The newspaper, which has operated from abroad since 2021, is seen as a symbol of press freedom in the country.
