Russia: Bridge Collapses Cause Train Derailments, Resulting in Fatalities and Injuries

Two separate bridge collapses in western Russia have led to the derailment of passenger and freight trains, resulting in at least seven fatalities and dozens of injuries, according to official statements.

The first incident occurred late Saturday in the Bryansk region, near the Ukrainian border, when a road bridge collapsed onto a passenger train traveling from Klimovo to Moscow. Authorities confirmed that seven people, including the train’s driver, were killed, and more than 30 others were injured, several critically.

A second incident took place early Sunday in the neighboring Kursk region, where a railway bridge gave way under a freight train, causing multiple cars to derail and ignite. One crew member was reported injured.

Russian investigators stated that both incidents appear to have been caused by explosions and are being treated as possible acts of sabotage. The Investigative Committee has launched a criminal probe under anti-terrorism laws.

The accidents come amid heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, just days ahead of planned peace negotiations in Istanbul. While Russian officials have hinted at Ukrainian involvement, Kyiv has not issued an official response.

President Vladimir Putin has been briefed on the situation, and emergency teams continue search and recovery operations. Authorities in the affected regions have declared a three-day mourning period.

The incidents have disrupted rail traffic in key western corridors and raised broader concerns about infrastructure security in conflict-adjacent areas.
