Sinking of Hazardous Cargo Ship off the Coast of India; Crew Rescued

A Liberia-flagged container ship named “MSC ELSA 3” sank off the coast of India while carrying “hazardous cargo,” according to Indian authorities on Sunday.

The 184-meter-long vessel was en route from Visakhapatnam Port to Kochi in the state of Kerala when it sent a distress signal on Saturday. All 24 crew members were rescued.

The ship was carrying 640 containers, including 13 with hazardous materials and 12 containing calcium carbide. It also held approximately 370 tons of fuel and oil, but no oil spill has been reported so far.
