Sudan’s newly appointed Prime Minister, Dr. Kamil Idris, arrived in the interim capital Port Sudan on Thursday, more than a week after his official appointment, putting to rest speculation over whether he would accept the role.
Dr. Idris, a former international civil servant and diplomat, was appointed by Transitional Sovereign Council Chairman General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan through a presidential decree issued on May 19. The post had remained vacant since the resignation of former Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok nearly four years ago.
According to the official Sudan News Agency (SUNA), Idris was received at Port Sudan Airport by several ministers and senior government officials. He is expected to be sworn in as Prime Minister in the coming days.
His return marks a key step in efforts to restore civilian leadership in Sudan amid ongoing political instability and conflict. Idris’s international credentials are seen as an asset in forming a transitional government capable of addressing Sudan’s deepening crisis and rebuilding state institutions.
