On Wednesday evening, Syrian government forces took control of the Sahnaia area near Damascus after over 20 hours of fighting against armed groups described by the government as lawbreakers.

The clashes resulted in more than 20 deaths on both sides, including 16 members of the Syrian security forces.

The Grand Mufti of Syria, Osama al-Rifai, warned of “fitna” following the violent events.
