Syrian President Ahmad Al-Sharaa said that the Syrian constitution will outline the criteria for granting citizenship to foreign fighters and their families, emphasizing that the matter will be governed by clear legal standards.
Speaking at a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron at the Élysée Palace in Paris, Al-Sharaa stated that the two leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations, focusing on reconstruction, security, justice, and accountability.
“We discussed the security of our borders, ongoing Israeli attacks, and the situation along the Lebanese frontier,” Al-Sharaa said, highlighting that Syria has opened its doors to the international investigation committee probing sectarian attacks.
The Syrian president also underscored his country’s commitment to combating drug trafficking and enhancing cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
Al-Sharaa’s visit to Paris marks his first trip to Europe since assuming office, where he was received by President Macron earlier in the day, a move seen by observers as a potential step toward re-engaging Syria with Europe.
