Ukraine announced Friday that it successfully targeted two Russian military airbases overnight, in what appears to be a continued campaign to strike strategic assets deep inside Russian territory.
According to a statement from the Ukrainian General Staff, the attacks hit three fuel storage facilities at the Engels airbase in Russia’s Saratov region and also struck the Dyagilevo airbase in the Ryazan region. The report was cited by Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The strikes come less than a week after Ukrainian drones reportedly targeted Russian strategic bombers, signaling Kyiv’s expanding reach and its focus on disrupting Moscow’s long-range strike capabilities.
Russian authorities have not yet issued an official response to the reported strikes, and Ukraine has not disclosed the types of weapons used or the full extent of the damage.
The Engels airbase is known to host long-range strategic bombers and is considered a key element of Russia’s nuclear deterrent infrastructure. The latest attacks underscore a significant escalation in Ukraine’s offensive operations beyond the front lines.
