UN Mission Announces Formation of Libya Truce Committee Led by Army Chief Haddad

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) announced Monday the formation of a new “Truce Committee” led by Mohammed al-Haddad, Chief of Staff of the Libyan Army, in coordination with the Libyan Presidential Council. The move builds on the recent de-escalation achieved in Tripoli last week.

In an official statement, the UN mission said the committee’s primary focus will be to facilitate a permanent ceasefire, ensure the protection of civilians, and establish security arrangements for the capital.

UNSMIL emphasized that the formation of the committee reflects a shared commitment among all parties to prevent further escalation and uphold their obligations under international humanitarian law and human rights law.

The development comes amid heightened security tensions in Tripoli in recent weeks, with increasing calls from both domestic and international actors to stabilize the situation and advance political and security dialogue.
