Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Tuesday officially inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), marking the completion of nearly 14 years of construction amid longstanding disputes with Egypt and Sudan over its filling and operation.
According to the Ethiopian News Agency, the ceremony was attended by several African leaders, including Djibouti’s President Ismail Omar Guelleh, South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Mayardit, Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, and Kenya’s President William Ruto.
Also present were Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, and Claver Gatete, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic Commission for Africa.
The inauguration marks a historic milestone for Africa’s largest hydropower project, even as regional concerns persist over its impact on downstream water security.
