EU Pledges €11.5 Billion Investment in South Africa’s Energy and Infrastructure Projects

The European Union announced  on Thursday a pledge to invest €11.5 billion (about $13.3 billion) in South Africa to finance projects in clean energy, infrastructure, and pharmaceutical manufacturing, according to Reuters.

A significant portion of the investment will focus on accelerating South Africa’s transition to renewable energy through expanding power generation capacity, upgrading transmission networks, improving energy storage, and boosting green hydrogen production.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen had previously pledged €4.7 billion ($5.44 billion) during her visit to South Africa in March. It was not immediately clear whether the latest commitment includes that amount or represents an additional investment.
