EU to vote on “return centers” and tougher migration rules

The 27 European Union member states will meet on Monday under pressure from right-wing and far-right groups to approve measures tightening migration policies, including the establishment of so-called “return centers” for migrants.

For the first time, EU interior ministers will vote in Brussels on three proposals put forward this year by the European Commission aimed at regulating migrant arrivals and returns.

The proposals include opening “return centers” outside EU borders for migrants whose asylum requests have been rejected, imposing stricter penalties on those who refuse to leave EU territory, extending detention periods, and sending migrants to countries deemed “safe” by Europe, even if they are not their countries of origin.
