EU Trade Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič will travel to Washington, D.C. on Wednesday for high-level talks with U.S. officials over escalating trade tensions, a spokesperson for the European Union confirmed.
Šefčovič is scheduled to meet U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative James Greer to address the looming threat of new tariffs.
The talks come after President Donald Trump warned he may impose a 30% tariff on European Union imports starting August 1—a move the EU considers “unacceptable” and potentially disastrous for transatlantic trade.
The European bloc hopes to use the talks to defuse the situation and preserve current trade relations between the world’s two largest economic zones, as fears mount over the global impact of a renewed trade war.
