European Countries Show United Front Against Trump’s Tariff Threats Over Greenland

Eight European countries on Tuesday expressed a united stance against U.S. President Donald Trump’s threats to impose additional tariffs over their opposition to his ambitions to take control of Denmark’s Greenland territory.

In a joint statement, Britain, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Norway and Sweden said that “threats of additional tariffs undermine transatlantic relations and risk a serious deterioration,” stressing that they would “continue to stand united and coordinated” in their response.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni underlined the need to confront Trump’s threats, pointing to a possible move to activate the European Union’s “anti-coercion instrument” should Washington proceed with the tariffs.

The mechanism, approved by the EU in 2023 but never used so far, allows the bloc to restrict access to its markets or block certain investments in response to economic pressure.
