The European Court of Human Rights on Tuesday ordered Russia to pay Georgia €253 million in compensation for violations committed against residents of Abkhazia and South Ossetia following the 2008 war.
The court found that Russia violated the rights of about 29,000 people, including victims of arbitrary detention and deprivation of education in their native language.
Despite the ruling, Moscow is unlikely to comply, having been expelled from the Council of Europe in 2022 after invading Ukraine.
