The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) is considering expanding the number of participating teams at the 2030 World Cup from 48 to 64, following a formal proposal submitted by a delegation of influential leaders from South America.
The 24th edition of the tournament is scheduled to take place across six cities spanning three continents. Matches will be hosted in Morocco, Portugal, and Spain, as well as in several South American nations — marking the first time in history that a World Cup is staged across three continents.
If approved, the expansion would significantly increase the scale of the competition and broaden participation worldwide, though it raises fresh questions about the logistical and organizational challenges of staging such a global event.
