French authorities said Wednesday they detained around 200 people during nationwide protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s economic and social policies.
Demonstrations, held under the slogan “Shut Everything Down,” erupted in multiple cities under heavy police presence. In Paris, hundreds gathered near Gare du Nord, where police used tear gas to block protesters from entering the station.
The unrest comes just two days after the French parliament voted to topple Prime Minister François Bayrou’s government over its plans to curb soaring public debt. The cabinet, in office for only nine months, became the first since 1958 to lose a confidence vote it had itself requested.
