French Court Issues Third Arrest Warrant for Former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad

French judicial authorities on Thursday issued a third international arrest warrant against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, accusing him of crimes against humanity and complicity in war crimes over the 2013 chemical attacks on Eastern Ghouta.

According to Agence France-Presse, the warrant was issued by investigating judges at the Paris Judicial Court, following a July 25 ruling by France’s Court of Cassation that annulled a previous warrant.

French investigators allege that Assad was directly involved in the chemical strikes, which killed more than 1,400 civilians and involved the use of internationally banned weapons. The case is part of an ongoing French judicial inquiry into the use of chemical weapons in Syria.
