French Parliament Votes No Confidence, Bayrou Government Falls Amid Debt Crisis

The French parliament on Monday toppled Prime Minister François Bayrou’s government after a no-confidence vote passed with 364 votes to 194, in an unprecedented move in the Fifth Republic’s history.

The decision came in protest against the government’s plans to curb public debt, which has reached 114% of GDP.

Bayrou, who has served as prime minister for only nine months, will submit his resignation on Tuesday to President Emmanuel Macron, who now faces the challenge of appointing a fifth prime minister in less than two years amid a deepening political crisis.
