South Africa launched the first G20 summit ever held on the African continent, with a work program aimed at addressing poverty and debt crises in the most vulnerable countries, amid the absence of the U.S. delegation.
The summit declaration reaffirmed the leaders’ commitment to supporting sustainable political solutions in Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the occupied Palestinian territories, and Ukraine.
Climate change emerged as a priority, in what was seen as an indirect response to U.S. President Donald Trump, who questions the role of human activity in global warming.
The U.S. draft plan on Ukraine also dominated discussions, with European efforts to prepare an alternative proposal.
