The Gambian Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Friday that at least 70 people have died after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of West Africa.

Authorities in Mauritania recovered 70 bodies on Wednesday and Thursday, while eyewitness accounts suggest that the death toll could exceed 100.

The tragedy marks one of the deadliest incidents in recent years along the well-known migration route to Europe, according to Reuters.
