Germany Signals Readiness to Help Clear Mines in Strait of Hormuz After War

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said the country’s armed forces could take part in mine-clearing operations in the Strait of Hormuz once the war involving Iran ends, provided there is an appropriate international mandate.

Speaking at an event in Frankfurt, Merz said Germany would be willing to act under a collective security mandate from organizations such as the United Nations, NATO, or the European Union, and with approval from the German parliament (Bundestag).

We can do that militarily,” he said, noting that Germany possesses specialized mine-clearing vessels.

Merz also stated that the strait is currently not mined, adding that it remains unclear whether Iran plans to lay naval mines in the waterway.
