Guinea Votes on New Constitution Potentially Allowing Military Leader to Run for Presidency

Polling stations opened Sunday for 6.7 million Guineans to vote on a proposed constitution that would extend presidential terms from five to seven years, renewable once, and establish a Senate with one-third of its members appointed by the president.

The new constitution could allow Transitional Council head and coup leader Mamady Doumbouya to run for president, paving the way for a transition from military to civilian rule.
