At least one Israeli soldier was killed and nine others wounded, some critically, after Palestinian fighters staged a large-scale ambush in the Zeitoun neighborhood of eastern Gaza on Friday evening.

Al Jazeera, citing Israeli media, reported that several soldiers were caught in what was described as a “major ambush.” The wounded were evacuated from the battlefield with injuries ranging from serious to critical.

According to the reports, the Israeli military deployed six additional helicopters to evacuate the casualties, while heavy clashes continued in the area.

Israeli outlets also said Hamas fighters had tracked the movements of Israeli forces using night-vision equipment before launching the attack. The military has since reinforced its troops in Zeitoun amid ongoing battles.
