Hundreds of thousands of Cambodian migrant workers fled Thailand on foot Wednesday, carrying their belongings, following recent clashes along the Thai-Cambodian border.
The mass departure comes in the wake of five days of cross-border fighting between the two neighboring countries, which resulted in at least 43 deaths and the displacement of approximately 330,000 civilians, according to Agence France-Presse.
Thailand and Cambodia agreed to a ceasefire that took effect on July 30, aimed at halting further violence and restoring stability in the volatile border region.
The border tensions have had a significant humanitarian impact, particularly on Cambodian laborers who make up a large portion of Thailand’s agricultural and service workforce. Many are now returning to their homeland amid fears of renewed violence and uncertainty over their safety and legal status in Thailand.
