Judges at the International Criminal Court on Tuesday sentenced Ali Muhammad Ali Abd-al-Rahman, known as “Ali Kushayb,” to 20 years in prison after convicting him on 27 charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Darfur more than two decades ago.
The charges included murder, torture, and orchestrating systematic rape during the 2003 conflict that killed hundreds of thousands and displaced nearly three million people.
The ruling marks the first conviction at this level against one of the main commanders of the Janjaweed militias relied upon by Omar al-Bashir’s regime during the Darfur war.
