Iran Downgrades Diplomatic Ties with Australia, Expels Australian Ambassador

Iran announced on Thursday that it has downgraded diplomatic relations with Australia and expelled the Australian ambassador from Tehran, in response to Canberra’s recent decision to expel the Iranian ambassador.

Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei stated that the move was taken “in accordance with diplomatic norms and in response to Australia’s action,” confirming that the Australian envoy has already left the country.

The decision follows Australia’s announcement on Tuesday to expel Iran’s ambassador and designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, accusing Tehran of involvement in two anti-Semitic attacks within Australia.
