The Iranian judiciary has denied claims that a death sentence was issued against Erfan Soltani, who was detained during ongoing protests in the country.
Iran’s state television on Thursday broadcast a written statement from the judiciary, stating that Soltani was arrested on January 10 and imprisoned on charges of “assembly and collusion against national security” and “engaging in propaganda against the regime.”
The statement clarified that the legal penalty for these charges is imprisonment, not the death penalty, and emphasized that reports claiming Soltani was sentenced to death two days after his arrest are false.
