Iran’s Assembly of Experts Reaches Majority Agreement on Successor to Khamenei

Iran’s Mehr News Agency reported on Sunday that Ayatollah Mohammad Mehdi Mirbagheri, a member of the Assembly of Experts, announced that a majority of the council had reached agreement on choosing a successor to the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

According to the report, Mirbagheri said that “some obstacles” still remain in the process.

Iranian media reported that the body responsible for appointing the country’s supreme leader had minor disagreements over whether the final decision should be issued after an in-person meeting of the members or announced without that formal step under the current circumstances.

Meanwhile, another Assembly of Experts member, Ayatollah Mohsen Heydari, said in a video published by Nour News that holding a physical meeting of the council for the final vote is currently not possible.

He added that the candidate had been selected based on advice from the late supreme leader that whoever assumes the position should be “hated by the enemy,” rather than being favored by it.
