Irish Voters Head to Polls to Elect Country’s 10th President

Voters in Ireland went to the polls on Friday to elect the country’s 10th president, with around 3.5 million registered voters eligible to cast their ballots.

Vote counting is expected to begin on Saturday, after polls close at 10:00 p.m. Friday, with the winner set to be inaugurated in a ceremony on November 11.

Connolly, representing the left and Irish nationalist parties, faces off against Humphreys, the candidate of the ruling Fianna Fáil party. If elected, she would become the third female president in Ireland’s history, following Mary Robinson (1990–1997) and Mary McAleese (1997–2011). Polls indicate Connolly could secure up to 60 percent of the vote, supported by seven parties and several independents.
