Israel Detains “Madeleine” Activists, Blocks Gaza Arrival

The aid ship Madeleine arrived at the Israeli port of Ashdod on Monday morning, carrying 12 activists who had been detained by an Israeli commando unit after being prevented from reaching the Gaza Strip in an attempt to break the ongoing blockade, according to Israel’s public broadcaster.

The newspaper Israel Hayom reported that the Israel Prison Service is preparing to detain the activists, having arranged separate cells for them at Givon Prison in Ramla. The report also stated that National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir ordered a ban on bringing communication devices, radios, and televisions into the prison, in addition to prohibiting the display of any Palestinian symbols.

Meanwhile, the legal center for Arab minority rights in Israel, Adalah, called on the Israeli authorities to immediately disclose the whereabouts of the detained activists, stating that they were forcibly held.

On Sunday night, the Israeli army announced that it had taken full control of the ship after issuing threats earlier that day to prevent it from reaching Gaza and demanding that it turn back. The Israeli Ministry of Defense stated that all those on board the Madeleine were safe and would be returned to their countries of origin.

The Israeli military also released footage showing the moment the foreign activists aboard the ship were detained, a move some observers view as a deterrent message against future attempts to challenge the blockade on Gaza
