The Israeli military said Tuesday it carried out a precision airstrike against what it described as the “top leadership of Hamas” in the Qatari capital Doha, where the group was meeting to discuss a proposal by former U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Gaza.

The army stated that the strike was conducted with precision-guided munitions, adding that initial reports indicate the killing of senior Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya.

A Reuters witness reported hearing several explosions in the Katara district of Doha, with smoke seen rising over the area.

The attack marks an unprecedented escalation by Israel beyond Gaza and its neighboring states, raising regional concerns over the widening scope of the conflict.
